Regular Maintenance
Vacuum weekly using a suction-only setting or a brush attachment. Avoid beater bars or rotating brushes, which can damage the fibers and weave. Alternate the direction of vacuuming to prevent wear patterns.
Rotation
Rotate your rug 180 degrees every few months to ensure even wear and sun exposure, especially in high-traffic areas.
Spot Cleaning
Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth—never rub, as this can spread the stain and damage fibers. For water-based spills, use cool water and blot repeatedly. For oil-based stains, sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the spot to absorb the oil, let sit for several hours, then vacuum. Test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area first.
Deep Cleaning
Have your rug professionally cleaned every 1-2 years, or more frequently in high-traffic areas. If you clean it yourself, use a wool-specific cleaner and cool water only—hot water can cause shrinkage and felting. Never soak the rug; use minimal moisture and ensure it dries completely and quickly.
Drying
If your rug gets wet, lay it flat to dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Never hang a wet wool rug, as the weight can distort its shape.
Protection
Use a rug pad underneath to prevent slipping and reduce wear. Keep the rug out of direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent fading. Avoid placing it in damp areas, as wool is susceptible to mold and mildew.
Moth Prevention
Vacuum regularly and ensure good air circulation. If storing, clean the rug first, roll it (never fold), wrap it in breathable cotton, and add cedar blocks or lavender sachets as natural moth deterrents.
